The landscape is rugged and dramatic against backdrop of volcanic mountains, hills and withered scrub trees that punctuate the sparse and dry terrain. The Ewaso Nyiro River, the lifeline of this area runs along the southern boundary dividing Samburu Game Reserve from Buffalo Springs Reserve. The river is a great point of concentration and interest to both visitors and wildlife. It forms the lifeline of this great reserve, and most animals cannot keep away from it as they come to quench their thirst from the river. In the dry season, elephants use their tusks to dig deep into the dry riverbeds of the river unearthing precious water. This water creates a green oasis and draws wildlife in great numbers to the banks. Crocodile and hippo share the river with the many small herds of elephant which bathe and frolic in the muddy brown waters during the heat of the day before returning later to browse on the lush vegetation of the riverine forest.
