WILDLIFE FOOTSTEPS TRAIL

Nairobi, Aberdares, Samburu, Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru, Lake Elementaita, Maasai Mara

Day 1: Nairobi /Aberdares

The Aberdare Range (formerly the Sattima Range, Kikuyu: Nyandarua) is a 160 km long mountain range of upland, north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi with an average elevation of 3,500 metres (11,480 ft). It is located in Nyandarua County, west central Kenya, northeast of Naivasha and Gilgil and just south of the Equator. Early breakfast and drive back towards Nairobi and head to the Aberdares ranges arriving at Outspan hotel for hot lunch. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred to Treetops Lodge for overnight game viewing.Depart Nairobi in 4×4 safari vehicle for the Aberdares arriving for lunch at Aberdare Country Club. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred to The Ark Forest Lodge which is tucked into the thick, verdant forests of Aberdares National Park for overnight game viewing, Full board.


Day 2: Aberdares/Samburu

The 766 sq. km of the Aberdare area are rich in wildlife. The Salient stretching out towards the nearby town of Nyeri, was once an elephant migration route, not used any more today. These great animals remain within the park together with buffalo, a wide variety of antelope, giant forest hog, the elusive bongo, rhino, lions and hyenas. Tacazze and Malachite Sunbird, Mountain Buzzard and African Goshawk are found in this area where the birdlife is abundant and varied. Enjoy overnight game viewing from the comfort you’re your room at Mountain Lodge. Breakfast and head north to Samburu Game Reserve located in the Northern Frontier District. Arrive for lunch at Elephant Bedroom Camp, located in a rugged landscape on the banks of Uaso Nyiro River surrounded by doum palms and other indigenous trees offering great natural scenery.
Later in the afternoon, proceed for an afternoon game drive in the expansive Samburu Game Reserve. Overnight: Elephant Bedroom Camp, Full board


DAY 3: Samburu Game Reserve

Whole day spent at Samburu Game Reserve with game drives. Samburu plays host to large herds of elephants. Other unique wildlife specifies are also very common sightings in this part of the wilderness. The Uaso Nyiro River is a great point of concentration and interest to both visitors and wildlife. It forms the lifeline of this great reserve and most animals cannot keep away from it as they come to quench their thirst from the river. Overnight: Elephant Bedroom Camp, Full board


Day 4: Samburu / Great Rift Valley

Samburu is part of a lava plain that includes a diverse landscape of thorn scrub, red dirt, dried river beds, broken volcanic rock, steep hills, and rocky outcroppings. The region is home to the uncommon Grevy’s zebra with huge fury ears, gerenuk antelope standing on hind legs to feed, Somali ostriches with distinct blue legs and the shy Oryx. Elephant and crocodile are guaranteed sightings, excellent bird watching with numerous varieties of weaverbirds and the martial eagle.Breakfast and drive past Mount Kenya into the Great Rift Valley arriving for lunch at Sunbird Lodge located on the shores of Lake Elementaita. Proceed for an afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park which a world famous wildlife habitat is offering a wide ecological diversity, from lakeshore, woodlands, grassy plains to rocky escarpments and ridges. Overnight: Sunbird Lodge, Full board

 


Day 5: Lake Elementaita/Maasai Mara

Set within the eastern portion of the Rift Valley, the lake was produced approximately 12 million years ago. The area is much less visited than other natural attractions in the region, so you enjoy a sense of privacy and solitude in a wondrous volcanic landscape. Much of your activity-enriched trip to Kenya’s Lake Elementaita takes place within the 48,000-acre conservancy that serves as a sanctuary for nationally threatened colobus monkeys, endangered Rothschild giraffes etc.  Leaving the Great Rift Valley behind, you will head out to Maasai Mara, which is the most outstanding wildlife sanctuary and Kenya’s premier game reserve, arriving for lunch at Kicheche Mara Camp. Kicheche is very intimate and classic tented camp hidden in a beautiful acacia valley overlooking the Olare Orok stream. After a warm welcome and delightful lunch, embark on a game drive with your driver guide in Maasai Mara, the ancestral home to the Maasai people. Overnight: Kicheche Mara Camp, Full board


Day 6: Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Today enjoy game drives in the Mara that will include visit to the Mara River, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra are attacked by crocodiles as they attempt to cross this mighty river during the annual migration between Tanzania and Kenya. The annual migration sees over a million wild animals move from Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania to Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Overnight: Kicheche Mara Camp, Full board


Day 7: Maasai Mara/Nairobi

Breakfast and drive back to Nairobi arriving in the afternoon. You will be dropped off either at your Nairobi Hotel or at the airport for your departure flight.
